Decorative Rock Facts

At Solheim Landscaping we use decorative rock around homes and throughout flower beds more often than mulch.  Rock is a one time application and is simply easier to maintain.  Rock will not degrade and in most cases does not fade.  Most plants will do well in rock beds and some actually prefer it.

Maintaining Your Rock Beds

Lets face it, weeds can grow almost anywhere!  Animals and birds can spread them into your landscaping as well as the wind.  Have a weedy yard or neighbors yard?  Then it may be difficult to avoid them!  For starters, we use commercial grade weed barrier under all rock applications that prevents most weeds from growing.  After that, you'll want to keep the rock beds clean from debris such as plant clippings when pruning and leaves that blow in durring the Fall season.  Do not let the leaves sit there all winter!  It is best to use a decorative rock that is 3/4" to 1 1/2" size.  Any larger and the leaves and needles are more difficult to clean out.  Even with a leaf blower!  And yes, a leaf blower is a must have item!  Once you do get a weed make sure to pull it out before the roots get too large.  Other methods include spot spraying the weeds with a weed killer or using a pre-emergent weed preventor.  We use Preen Plus on our maintenance jobs to keep grassy and broadleaf weeds to a minimum.  It has proven to be very effective and we apply it once every two months.  Preen Plus will only help prevent weed seeds from germinating and has no effect on weeds that are already growing.  Preen is also safe around most plant beds and some even have fertilzer mixed in.   We recommend using a slow release fertilizer on all plant areas to get the best from from your plants and to keep them healthy and strong.
